The idea was to take Stravinsky’s 35 minute work for a huge orchestra and condense it into a 10 to 12 minute piece for woodwind quintet, capturing the essence of the work and highlighting the ingenious ways in which Stravinsky uses woodwind instruments. In the summer of 2010, Imani Winds commissioned me to expand the arrangement by another 8 minutes. It was a thrilling opportunity to delve into this monumental piece, to figure out how it works, and how I could condense and re-imagine it without losing its fundamental qualities. The score and parts are published by Potenza Music, and Imani Winds has released a recording of it on EMI.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0828/6738/8654/files/riteofspringarrforwoodwindquintet-expandedversion-FINALp3.jpg?v=1790949961
scheherazade-woodwind-quintet
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: SCHEHERAZADE (woodwind quintet)

INSTRUMENTATION: Woodwind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb/A, Bassoon, Horn)

DURATION: c. 20:00

YEAR COMPOSED: 2014

Commissioned by Imani Winds, this arrangement condenses Rimsky-Korsakav’s 45-minute tone poem into a 20 minute chamber work that still effectively evokes the vivid colors and basic story-line of the original.

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0828/6738/8654/files/scheherazadearrforwoodwindquintet-transposedscorep3.jpg?v=1790776394
double-concerto-for-clarinet-and-cello-piano-reduction
DOUBLE CONCERTO FOR CLARINET AND CELLO, PIANO REDUCTION (clarinet, cello, and piano)

INSTRUMENTATION: Clarinet, Cello, and Piano

DURATION: c. 19:30

YEAR COMPOSED: 2021

Piano reduction of the original orchestral version, which was commissioned by the Peninsula Symphony and San Francisco Chamber Orchestra

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

(video is of the orchestral version)

PROGRAM NOTE:

The combination of clarinet and cello has special significance for me; my wife plays the cello, and we fell in love in college playing the Brahms Clarinet Quintet together.
