The first movement is an arrangement of a wind octet I wrote earlier in 2011 (2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns), which was composed as a companion piece to Mozart’s C minor Wind Serenade. I sought in this work to combine the clarity, resonance, and sense of drama that characterizes Mozart’s “Serenade” with my own expanded harmonic palette and driving rhythms. Movements 2 and 3 are arrangements of tunes I originally wrote for a klezmer band. It was challenging but also a lot of fun to take these tunes, both of which have very free, improvisatory sections, and arrange them into fully notated music for clarinet choir. The resulting three-movement suite takes full advantage of the vast range of colors and characters that the clarinet choir can produce, ranging from the thick chords of the opening to the jazz and klezmer riffs of the second movement, to the driving dance rhythms and virtuosic runs of the final movement.

...AND THE BEAST... He struts his stuff, showing off his agility, his romantic spirit, his dance moves, and his deep, deep voice. But it is to no avail. Finally, resigned, he slinks back down into the mud from whence he came. He is defeated – for now. Musically, the piece presents the contrabass clarinet with a series of technical challenges that mirror the bullfrogs attempts to attract a mate, from tuning perfect intervals with the piano, to managing large leaps, to fast articulations, to soaring lyricism. Hopefully, the contrabass clarinetist will be more successful in fulfilling their quest than the bullfrog was! There were, of course, countless differences I noticed upon returning to my home in a medium-sized city in the northeastern US. But the most surprising was how eerily quiet the night now was. In the rainforest, the night teemed with the sounds of insects, frogs, owls, and other unknown creatures; the lapping of waves and the wind in the trees; and just before dawn, the chattering of birds and the haunting wails of the howler monkeys. Here at home, aside from the occasional sounds of cars going by, it was…silent. What had once seemed so appealing about our neighborhood – how quiet it was – now seemed uncanny, even sinister. “We’ve killed the night!” I found myself thinking.

“Song of the Ancient Night” is an attempt to re-imagine those ancient nights on earth, before the spread of modern human civilization and its destruction of habitats, wilderness, and the sounds of the night. It is not intended to literally depict any particular sounds, but rather to evoke the sensations of mystery and wonder that I felt during those nights in Costa Rica.

To achieve this effect, the piece uses open-ended notation, providing pitch content and text instructions, but leaving the details open to the players and conductor.
