I composed it in 2006 or 2007 to use as a prelude for a church service when I was working as the music director at First Congregational Church, San Francisco. I didn’t notate it down at the time beyond a few quick, barely legible sketches. Over the years, I drew on it from time to time to play in church services or other settings where some contemplative music was called for. It also evolved over the years, with slight alterations and adjustments each time I played it. In May 2020, flutist Laura Lentz ask me if I would contribute something to a collection of solo flute works she was compiling called “Comfort Pieces.” The idea of the collection was to provide comfort and connection in the midst of the pandemic lockdown that was taking such a devastating toll on musicians’ livelihoods and spirits. Prelude / Chant seemed like a good fit for this theme, and so I fully notated it for the first time to contribute to her collection.

For this bass clarinet version, I initially recorded only the melody on bass clarinet, and then recorded myself improvising various drones, echoes, and countermelodies against it. Through a process of iterative trial-and-error, I gradually crafted this arrangement, and then had to figure out the best way to notate it. It starts out quite calm and meditative, in the spirit of the original solo melody version, but becomes increasingly pleading and anguished as it progresses, before returning to quiet drones and distant filigrees at the end.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0828/6738/8654/files/Prelude-Chantforbassclarinetensemblep2.jpg?v=1790710252
hildegard-o-virtus-sapientiae-bass-clarinet-ensemble
HILDEGARD: O VIRTUS SAPIENTIAE (9-part bass clarinet choir)

INSTRUMENTATION: Bass Clarinet Choir (8 parts)

DURATION: c. 7:30

YEAR COMPOSED: 2022

Adapted from a chant melody by Hildegard von Bingen.

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0828/6738/8654/files/OVirtusSapientiaeforbassclarinetensemble-FINALp1.jpg?v=1790706594
on-g-low-clarinet-ensemble
ON G (low clarinet choir)

INSTRUMENTATION: Any Number of Low Clarinets (parts for alto, bass, contra-alto, and contrabass)

DURATION: Open-ended

YEAR COMPOSED: 2022

Commissioned by ICA Low Clarinet Festival 2023

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

INSTRUMENTATION: 12 Bass Clarinets

DURATION: c. 8:00

YEAR COMPOSED: 2024

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

“Do not feel lonely, the entire universe is inside you.

Stop acting so small. There were, of course, countless differences I noticed upon returning to my home in a medium-sized city in the northeastern US. But the most surprising was how eerily quiet the night now was. In the rainforest, the night teemed with the sounds of insects, frogs, owls, and other unknown creatures; the lapping of waves and the wind in the trees; and just before dawn, the chattering of birds and the haunting wails of the howler monkeys. Here at home, aside from the occasional sounds of cars going by, it was…silent. What had once seemed so appealing about our neighborhood – how quiet it was – now seemed uncanny, even sinister. “We’ve killed the night!” I found myself thinking.

“Song of the Ancient Night” is an attempt to re-imagine those ancient nights on earth, before the spread of modern human civilization and its destruction of habitats, wilderness, and the sounds of the night. It is not intended to literally depict any particular sounds, but rather to evoke the sensations of mystery and wonder that I felt during those nights in Costa Rica.

To achieve this effect, the piece uses open-ended notation, providing pitch content and text instructions, but leaving the details open to the players and conductor. No two performances will be exactly alike, as each ensemble follows their own ears and instincts to sculpt their own unique version of the ancient night.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0828/6738/8654/files/SongoftheAncientNight-FINAL-scorep4_3e6b8386-2892-4c78-883c-8deeb7871d63.jpg?v=1790543135
we-reflect-we-grieve-we-rise-1
WE REFLECT, WE GRIEVE, WE RISE (clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano)

INSTRUMENTATION: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Piano

DURATION: c. 19:00

YEAR COMPOSED: 2025

Consortium Commission

THIS IS A DIGITAL PRODUCT: Purchase includes digital download of score and a complete set of parts in PDF format.

PROGRAM NOTE:

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times.
